Labour Ministry working on self-sponsorship law for expatriates
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MSAL) has suggested that expatriates can seek self-sponsorship, provided they have a minimum balance of KD10,000 in their bank account.
As per the proposed amendments to the current regulation, an individual or group of individuals will be permitted to sponsor a third person, provided their bank account contains KD10,000.
To obtain an exemption from the present regulations, the applicant should be a businessman or a partner in a business venture for atleast two successive years. The MSAL is also studying the possibility of permitting certain professionals to gain their own work visa without a local sponsor.
The proposal was first presented in 2005 as draft law, and now being studies by the Labour Ministry. The MSAL also has a draft law to scrap the sponsorship system in Kuwait, which is still awaiting response from the Parliament. If the Parliament approves to scrap the sponsorship system, the state authority will be the sole authority for sponsorship of expatriate workers in Kuwait.
