Kuwait may permanently end transfer of visit visas to work permits

The Labour Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, Jamal Al-Dosary, revealed that Kuwait may permanently put an end to the practice of transferring visit visas to work permits.

Al-Dossary said that the government is currently studying the issue, as there is a tendency to stop the visit visa and convert it to work permit transfer process permanently, although it will be done in a gradual manner.

The Ministry has begun limiting such transfers, together with Interior Ministry. This step will be followed by a permanent ban on transfer in the future. Such a decision is being considered following the latest statistical reports that indicate transfer of visit visas to work permits, which has led to growth in number of marginal workers in the country.

This step also aims at balancing population structure, considering the fact that the number of expatriates in Kuwait labour market surpasses the number of nationals.

However, such a measure does not mean that the Ministry intends to make it harder for companies to recruit the required workers. Al-Dossary emphasized that this will, in fact, help in maintaining the skilled and technical workers whose services are vital for growth of the nation.

As for the alleged plan aimed at reducing expat population ad limiting residency of foreigners, Al-Dosary confirmed that Kuwait is in co-ordination with other Gulf nations, although no decision on this has been finalized.
