Shelter for accommodation of mal-treated expat workers

A budget of KD700,000 has been approved for establishment of a shelter for expat workers, who have escaped from their sponsors due to maltreatment, delayed payment of salaries and labour problems.

According to Deputy Director of Labour Relations Department, Hadi Al-Enzi, who supervises the temporary shelter for absconding expat workers, shelter can accommodate 900 workers who face problems with employers.

The workers are permitted to remain in the shelter until settlement of labour dispute through combined efforts of Interior Ministry, Health, Justice, Social Affairs and Labour Ministry.

The shelter will be established in an abandoned school building, which will be re-constructed and equipped with necessary amenities for absconding workers. The shelter will also serve as an information centre for expatriates and will permit the concerned institutions to implement strategies for effective implementation of Ministry of Social Affairs and Labourís policy on regulating the local labour market, Al-Enzi said.
