Kuwait to suspend issuance of work permits indefinitely

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour has announced plans to suspend issuance of work permits indefinitely, owing to growth in number of marginal workers in the country.

Earlier, the Ministry had issued a decision permitting specific categories of sponsors to bring in laborers. But, many had taken advantage of the privilege to recruit marginal workers, which compelled the ministry to take such a measure, the sources said.

Meanwhile, several sponsors are trying to evade the decision by registering other businesses, so as to facilitate the process of recruiting marginal workers into the country.

The Labour Ministry has no jurisdiction over local political issues and restrictions on expatriate personnel in Kuwait, and is purely based on political decisions or security instructions, clarified Mansour Al-Mansour, the Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs.
