Proposed GCC railway link on track

The proposed GCC Railway linking the six GCC nations will be 2117km in length, the officials revealed.

The tracks running from Kuwait City to Muscat will be designed for passenger trains to run at speed of 200km/h and freight trains at 80-120km/h.

Prior to the economic recession, the overall cost of the project was estimated to be $15bn (Dh.55.17bn), said Al Katheeri, Executive Director of Land Transport Department said.

A report released in December said that infrastructure work alone will cost about $11.2bn. Every country will meet the cost of infrastructure in its respective territory.

In the UAE, Union Railway, the developer and operator of the proposed national railway, announced that it would tender civil engineering contracts in March. The qualifying bidders will begin the first phase of work on the Shah-Habshan-Ruwais section, and will eventually form a part of the GCC railway. The construction of this section will begin during the mid-year.

Al Katheeri said that in the Emirates, the work is on track, or rather, ahead of schedule.
