Kuwait holds 69percent expatriate population

Expatriates in Kuwait account for 69percent of total population in the country, and ranks fourth globally in terms of ratio of expatriates to citizens, as per the World Bank Report issues this week.

Qatar topped the list, with expatriates constituting 87percent of the total population in the country, while Monaco was placed second (72% expatriates), and UAE in third positions (70% expat population).


The World Bank also reported that the United States continues to top the list of nations for immigration, following by Russia, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Canada also witnessing several new immigrants.


Meanwhile, in Kuwait, the housemaid working here are happy with their job conditions and are well-treated by their employers, said a leading human rights organization official.


The comment was made by Priyanka Motoparthy, a researcher in the MENA division of Human Rights Watch, during a lecture hosted by the Gulf University of Science and Technology (GUST), when speaking about the rights of domestic workers in Kuwait and in other countries in the Middle East.


In her research about working conditions of Asian workers in the Gulf, Motaparthy reported that housemaids in Kuwait were comparatively happy with the job situation and were well-treated by their employers.
