Huge transportation projects in Kuwait likely to reduce traffic issues
Kuwait is witnessing huge transportation projects to improve the country’s connectivity with neighbours, while also reducing congestion and traffic problems.
Kuwait is keeping pace with its regional counterparts, and is likely to begin implementing its own rail and metro projects, as part of GCC’s wider efforts to improve public transportation networks.
According to Middle East rail expert and Manager for Arup, Oliver Billings, the current transport infrastructure in Kuwait is limited to motor vehicles, and peak hour traffic is often affected. After years of slow infrastructure development, this appears to be changing.
The change is evident in the Kuwait metro project. The new public transport system will reach 550kms on completion, and will cover northern and southern parts of the country, and will include major infrastructure such as railway stations and airports.
Certain other issues too, such as transition from cars to public transportation, which has been a major problem in this part of the world, will also be addressed.
The governments across GCC have been striving to promote a shift to public transportation. Although they is a major role for the private car in future development of Kuwait City, the inherent inefficiency of car-based living in high density urban areas is a major constraint to future success.
Oliver said that integrating land use and transportation planning should address this issue so as to create attractive places to live, work and play, without depending on private cars, and with good provision for mass transit and pedestrian movements. All policies, including parking strategies have a major role to play in supporting the essential investment in public transport.
