Kuwait needs to focus on local tourism development
The summer heat has motivated several people to abandon Kuwait, although there are many others who opt to spend their days lounging in the warm sand of the beach and enjoying the salty waters of the Arabian Gulf.
This has brought in a trend of “local tourism”, which has further received a boost with the early onset of Ramadan this year, prompting people to spend this summer in Kuwait.
A young woman who spoke to the media, agreed that the concept of local tourism in Kuwait was limited to families with medium or high income, as resorts in Kuwait are too expensive.
Several others in the public, who spoke to the media, said that there was no tourism in Kuwait, and given the high costs of hotels and lack of sense of luxury there, apart from bearing horrid weather, the only thing people could do was to hop from one mall to the next, meet at cafes and restaurants.
Another Kuwaiti resident, Sara Al-Wagian, said that although Kuwait is a beautiful country, and is economically prosperous, it is unfortunate that tourism is given least priority, and Kuwait is still holding on to old projects that are no-longer attractive to tourists.
Another resident, Mohammad Al-Haddad said that high costs of hotel are a problem. Even the summer festivals by the National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters are not well-marketed in the media, he said.
He said that there needs to be greater organization of local tourism to make it more attractive.
Meanwhile, Lana Al-Rushaid, the Director – Sales and Marketing at one of the leading hotels in Kuwait, said that there was great demand for beach houses during summer, but they were leased ‘only’ to families, owing to government restrictions. Therefore, the youngsters who were single did not have the option of spending summers here. Moreover, with beach houses and rooms being booked in advance throughout summer, it was difficult to make new reservations.Read more news
