Kuwait mulls implementation of 13 mega projects in short-term
The government of Kuwait is serious about implementation of the development strategy with 13 mega projects to be carried out during the first year of the plan, a senior official has confirmed.
The Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Minister of State for Development Affairs, and Minister of State for Housing Affairs, Sheikh Ahmed Al Fahad Al Ahmad Al Sabah, when speaking during a meeting with state departments, said that the first step would be the signing of contract for 1,100-bed Jaber Hospital, due to be delivered in four years. The second in list, would be the construction of Boubyan Port, now under contracting, designing and assessment of tender. Sheikh Ahmad expects that the signing will take place in two months time, following by expansion project so as to accommodate a population of 20mn. This venture would take five years for completion.
He also indicated the signing of contracts for Jaber Al-Ahmad, Saad Al-Abdullah and Sabah Al-Ahmad towns, apart from northwest Sulaibikhat housing project, and the causeway, which would extend from the United Nations to Al Jahraa roundabout, and the Jamal Abdel Nasser Road, in four years time.
Speaking about projects for which deals were already singed, Sheikh Ahmad said that the Al-Sabbiah power station and Al-Zor reactor are due to be tendered. However, the project may be launched only after formation of a public shareholding company.
Sheikh Ahmed, continued to speak about other vital projects, such as the Kuwait University project, due to be finalized by 2014, and added that the feasibility studies of Silk City and Boubyan Port has already been finalized and would be submitted to the National Assembly in September or October.
Privatization of Kuwait Airways is also in the agenda, and will be done during the current fiscal year, and preparatory work for the same is underway.
The law of the annual plan actually includes 833 projects, with a projected cost of KD4.8bn dinars, with the execution responsibility to be shouldered by the government.
An annual report will be submitted to the cabinet every three months to point out any hindrances obstructing the implementation of the plan, and the proposed remedies, Sheikh Ahmed said.
The annual plan is also attached with 45 proposed laws, to be adopted in two years, and a team of legal experts will be responsible in this case, the Minister said.
