New State-owned e-payment system launched in Kuwait
A new state-owned electronic payment system has been introduced in Kuwait, wherein nationals and residents can pay their electricity and water bills, immigration, traffic, telephone bills, civil identification cards and legal fees.
The electronic pre-paid government system, Tasdeed, was unveiled yesterday by Mustafa Al-Shamali, Finance Minister, under the patronage of the Prime Minister, Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
The system facilitates easy payment online, and through mobile and other automated machines. The system is the result of efforts by Finance Ministry, the Central apparatus for Information Technology, and KNET.
Speaking during the occasion, the General Manager of KNET, Abdullah Al-Ajmi, said that the Kuwaiti government began the project in 2007. It had formed a team to perform online payment of government services in co-operation with KNET.
This is a good step ahead in improving government functioning, and is hoped to improve communication levels between the government and citizens. Through the system, the citizens can pay for every government sector with the help of machines, he added.
The KNET services will be adopted by government bodies such as agencies, ministries, and will be carried out through the internet. The agreement for the project was signed in May 2008, while the transactions began in August 2008. Only three transactions were initially done to ensure that the government can handle the process. However, until last month, 200 transactions were carried out in the government, and the value stood at KD3.7mn.
The Ministries involved in the Tasdeed system are the Ministries of Finance, Justice, Interior, Communications, Water and Electricity. Tasdeed aims to increase internet payment to 85 percent, Al-Ajmi said.
