New supervisory authority announced for Boubyan, Silk City projects
The Kuwaiti Cabinet has approved the establishment of government authority to monitor the affairs of Silk City (Madinat Al-Harr) and Boubyan Island, announced Dr Fadhil Safar, the Ministry of Public Works and Municipal Affairs minister.
However, the decision by the government to establish a supervisory body, has given rise to questions regarding the intentions behind the decision. A Kuwait University professor who spoke to the media, pointed out that earlier, the government had promised to permit private sector participation in construction of these projects, rather than making them wholly governmental.
“If all major projects by the government in the development plan are likely to be monitored by governmental authorities, we will never see development actually take place,” the professor said.
Explaining further, the professor said that the government should fight bureaucracy and not encourage it. It needs to take the development plan seriously and work towards materializing it.
The professor asserted that by taking such measures such as creating an independent authority, it would only benefit certain individuals such as merchants and businessmen, who are allies to the government. This will hamper Kuwait’s future and development, she as several Kuwaitis have already lost hope about these development projects.
Meanwhile, speaking about the Subiya Highway, Safar said that at the opening of the project, such ventures were essential to implement the development plans of the state.
The highway will be of most importance in embarking on the development of northern parts of Kuwait, such as the Jaber Bridge project, and has been designed to meet international standards and will be used as a logistical route for development of northern Kuwait.
