Labour Ministry mulls effective fair alternative to Sponsorship system
The possible alternatives to the current Sponsorship (Kafeel) system were discussed by the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, Mohammed Al-Ifasi.
The meeting was held as a follow-up to Ministerial Decree No.179 of 2009, stipulating that people who served their employers for three years have the right to transfer their residency without approval of former employer.
Speaking to the press, the Minister said that his ministry is interested in introducing a new regulation as an alternative to the current sponsorship system, and the new regulation should protect the rights of both employer and employee.
As for the domestic helps, the Minister emphasized that new solutions to this issue would be soon discussed and implemented.
The Ministry also said that those who have received deportation letter from their employers following the request by the employers the Ministry of Social Affairs suspecting legal discrepancies would be re-assessed in a manner so as to ensure their legal status within the correct legal framework.
The co-ordination with the department of immigration is necessary and the procedures need to be streamlined with the use of automated links in all departments, he added.
