New law protecting rights of domestic helpers on the agenda
A law protecting the rights of domestic helpers in Kuwait will be issued by May, confirmed the Social Affairs and Labour Minister in Kuwait.
Kuwait is keen on implementing standards that are compatible with principles and values of International Labour Organization (ILO), and this interest is reflected in the new private sector law, said the Minister.
The new law will be published in the official gazette in two weeks time, and the copies will be sent to ILO (Indian Labour Organization), while the law governing the status of domestic workers will be promulgated by month of May, the Minister added.
Kuwait had last month endorsed a new labour law, which granted more rights to foreign workers. But, the law was criticized for not including clauses that cover the rights of more than 60,000 domestic helpers.
One of the Kuwaiti officials even suggested reducing the number of domestic workers in the country, to maintain the demographic balance and fight human trafficking.
Brig. Kamel Al Awadhi, Head of Immigration Directorate, said that at present the number of domestic helpers in the country is very large, standing at 60,000 in number. It needs to be reduced to maintain a balanced population formula.
