Is Kuwait the best place in the region for expats?
The Second Annual Expat Experience Survey, recently commissioned by HSBC Bank International, revealed that Canada, Australia and Thailand are the best places for expatriates.
Britain, being hit by recessions, is one of the worst locations to live in for expats, the survey news report by Reuters said.
However, expats in Canada seem to enjoy good quality of life with its society offering wonderful opportunities for social integration for the newcomers.
Also, Australia and Thailand, despite being hit by recession, continued to be the most favourite locations chosen by immigrants.
The survey offers excellent insights into what exactly expatriates expect in different countries around the world, few of which include, equal compensation packages, quality of products, good job prospects, easy social integration in the host country, finding a place to live in good quality accommodation and good health services.
As far as the Middle East region is concerned, Kuwait is the best place for expatriates, although there are few shortcomings that need to be looked into, in order to transform the country wholly as the best place for expats, reports Arab Times.
The first step towards this direction is to practice better employer-employee relationship. Given the delay in execution of the new labour law, Kuwait is yet to reach a stage wherein expatriate workers could be provided with effective legal and contractual protection.
Being still plagued by the current Kafeel (sponsorship) system, chances are that it could seriously discourage new professional expatriates.
The quality of life by domestic workers and other manual labourers also need to be improved. The workers occupy the lowest level of employment in Kuwait, although many do not even enjoy basic protection of decent work.
On the whole, Kuwait needs to adopt a more welcoming approach to expatriate friends and partners, rather than viewing them as foreigners, and need to be treated on par with Kuwaiti nationals.
