GCC States all set to ban sponsorship system
The GCC States are all set to cancel the sponsorship system under which expatriate manpower is hired in the region.
The sources associated with GCC labour market, said that following Bahrain’s announcement on Monday about a new labour law from 1st August this year, which does away with sponsorship system, other GCC nations too are expected to follow suit.
The Director General of Arab Labour Organization (ALO), Ahmad Lokman, said that all GCC States, hoped to cancel the sponsorship system, and agreed that Bahrain has taken a major step in this direction and other GCC countries is also hoped to follow suit.
The concept of sponsorship has deviated from its objectives. Several malpractices have put the GCC states in a disadvantageous situation and hence, it should be replaced with another system or cancelled, Lokman said.
Meanwhile, the International Labour Organization (ILO) representative in Kuwait, Thabit Haroon, said that Kuwait has delayed the decision, due to complicated political and economic conditions.
