Nuclear energy commission to be established in Kuwait
The Cabinet of Kuwait has approved a legislation to establish a national commission for nuclear energy uses, an official statement says.
Headed by the Prime Minister, the Commission will design policies required for a peaceful nuclear energy programme, in co-operation with International Atomic Energy Agency, the statement by the cabinet said.
The legislation needs to be passed by the parliament and signed by emir to become effective.
Studying the plan by Kuwait, Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, last month, said that a French firm has been considering a plan by Kuwait for a civilian nuclear programme to produce power. However, he did not reveal the name of the Company. The French-controlled Areva, is one of the largest nuclear power reactor manufacturers in the world.
According to Sheikh Sabah, the purpose of the programme is to generate power and save huge quantities of fuel being consumed by power and water desalination plants.
Kuwait is a member of the GCC, which has decided to develop a joint-nuclear technology programme for peaceful use under international regulations.
Besides Kuwait, the group includes Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.
A deal has been signed by the UAE with the United States, to co-operate in Civilian Nuclear Energy.
