Kuwait mulls banning of sponsorship system
The Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour for Legal Affairs, Jamal al-Dousari, said that Kuwait has taken serious steps in protecting the rights of foreign workers, and is considering banning of the sponsorship systems.
In a statement released, following meeting with government officials, he mentioned that the ministry plans to introduce a change by amending few articles pertaining to the labour regulation, adopted in 1995.
According to the amended articles, no recruitment of workers would be possible without approval by the ministry. The employers have been warned against bringing in non-essential workers, and those violating the law would attract strict penalties.
The Secretary General of Manpower Restructuring Program in Kuwait, Hind Al-Sabeeh, also appealed that a regulation should be passed which emphasizes private sectors to recruit Kuwaitis, as it is high-time that private sectors need to be persuaded to employ nationals.
The Ministry is also expected to pass other such regulations to control the working hours at private sectors.
