High rate of unemployment hits the Arab World
The two-day activities of the Arab Economic and Social Forum concluded on Sunday. The final session of the forum, focused on unemployment and immigration of youth in the Arab World.
The Qatari Minister of Labour, Sultan Al-Dosari, said that more attention needs to be paid to issues pertaining to youth. He warned that the Arab world has reached high levels of unemployment, which constitutes 22 percent of actual workforce.
The annual increase in unemployment levels was around 1.5 percent. Al-Dosari has asked for bringing about a balance between education and labour market requirements. He called upon businessmen to establish a bank to fund small-sized projects, which could be operated by the youth, as a manner to eradicate unemployment.
The official also sought minimization of foreign labour and has prompted Arab brains to return to their home countries. The Director General of Arab Labour Organization (ALO), Ahmad Lukman has revealed that about 54 percent of youth are currently unemployed. More than 4million people are in need of jobs in the next decade.
Kuwait’s initiative to call for the economic summit was much appreciated by Lukman. He warned against growing unemployment and pointed out that 18mn people were unemployed. The unemployment in Arab region was 9 percent, the worst in the global market.
Lukman pointed out that private sector plays a major role in creating jobs for youth, particularly in services sector, in order to tackle masked unemployment, said a Kuwaiti businessman on Sunday.
