About 3400 Indians leave Kuwait availing amnesty
With just about a week left for expiry of the amnesty scheme in Kuwait for illegal expatriates, about 3400 Indians, who form majority of expatriate population in Kuwait, have put in their applications.
Dinesh Bhatia of Indian Embassy in Kuwait said About 3400 Indians have applied for emergency outpasses till date, and we are processing the same. We will get to know the final figure after consultation with authorities in Kuwait, after the conclusion of the scheme.
The amnesty scheme, launched on September 1 by Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to mark the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan, expires on 15th October. Under this scheme all immigration departments across the state would assist individuals to either update their illegal residency status or help them in leaving the country without penalties. Expatriates returning to their home countries after deportation will have to follow the official procedures.
Kuwait constitutes about 5,50,000 Indian population. So far, about 20,000 illegal expatriates have left the nation, taking advantage of the scheme. This number is hoped to touch 40,000 towards expiry of the deadline.
The authorities in Kuwait denied any plans for possible extension of amnesty period. Strict action has been warned against illegal residents following expiry of amnesty period.
The Assistant Chief of Technical Affairs at the Immigration Authority, said that illegal residents who continue to reside in the country after lapse of amnesty period, will be deported and not permitted to return.
Even employers/sponsors of such illegals will have to face stern measures. The residency permits of expats sponsoring such illegal residents will also be suspended.
