Kuwait Towers erased out of the list of top 10 tallest skyscrapers

The renowned Kuwait Towers, known as the tallest towers in the country for a long time now, will no longer list itself among the ten tallest buildings in the capital within next couple of years.

After an official launch during March 1979, The Kuwait Tower had its main tower standing high at 187 meters. But, with new towers being constructed year after year, the city’s symbol had several competitors.

The Al-Hamra Tower, currently under construction, will now be the topmost among the tallest buildings in the capital, in fact, even taller than the 412 mts.

Liberation Tower, comprising 77 stories. The tower owns the credit of being the first sculpture and stone-constructed skyscraper in the world. With more than 40 elevators, travelling at a speed of 10 meters per second, bearing the capacity to hold more than 40 persons, the project bears an investment worth KD40mn.

The next in list is KD90mn worth Capital Tower, 376 meters in height, comprising 70 storeys. The tower will be complete by 2010.

The 372 meters tall Liberation Tower was the highest in the Middle East region until a few years back, which now ranks third in the list among the new towers in the capital. The tower, worth KD50mn was completed in 1996.

The Gate of Kuwait ranks fourth, with 320 meters in height, including 70 storeys. This tower is followed by the Arraya Tower, the fifth in the list, still under construction, and likely to be complete next year, at 300 meters in height and 60 storeys.

The 70 storey, 280 meters in height, Capital Complex Tower is the sixth in the list, followed by the InterContinental Hotel Tower at the seventh position bearing the same height and 60 storeys.

The Al-Motahida Tower is the eighth, with 60 storeys and 260 meters in height. This is also under construction and will be complete by 2010. The Kuwait Central Bank holds the ninth position standing 240 meters high with 42 storeys, which is also under construction.

The Kuwait Literary Waqf Tower by Abdulaziz Al-Babtain is ranked as the tenth in the list, which is 230 meters in height and includes 50 storeys, all ready for completion by 2009.

However, this list of top ten buildings in Kuwait City cannot be concluded as being final, as it changes from time to time, with new buildings emerging, after officially being licensed by the Kuwait Municipality, or even when these towers undergo structural changes.

The most renowned skyscraper in Kuwait will however, be Mubarak Al-Kabir Tower, likely to come up in the Silk City of Kuwait. It will be 1001 meters in height as per plans. The final design of the tower is under discussions.

Amidst all these emerging skyscrapers, the Kuwait Towers will lose its position of being the highest in both Kuwait City and in the entire region, but, they will continue to be one of the most sought-after tourist attractions in the city, reports KUNA.
