Measure to improve traffic situation may prove ineffective
According to media reports, the new government measure to tackle rush hour traffic problem, is likely to be another ineffective policy.
The measure, which involves, changing the work hours of all government employees, likely to be implemented after Ramadan, saw several motorists reacting to the decision by voicing their objections in unison. The new scheme, which, according to the government, would help in reducing traffic jams tremendously.
The Head of Civil Service Commission, Muhammad Al-Roumi, in consultation with the Interior Ministry, has announced the timings under the new scheme for the government employees, which aims at drastically reducing traffic jams during peak hours.
An employee working in the Shuwaikh Industrial Area said that there are traffic jams every day in the area, and the new timings would be effective only when even the private sectors are included under the new timings.
According to CSC, the new timings will be divided into two stages. The first being from 7am to 2pm, and the next from 8am to 3pm. The working hours of ministries in the vicinity of the First Ring Road will be from 7am to 2pm, while those located away from the area will work from 8am to 3pm.
A car mechanic from Maidan Hawally, said maybe it will reduce the number of cars by just one or two, but, it will not make a difference. However, taking into consideration the number of private cars, this may not help.
The Ministry of Education, is however, exempted from this regulation, as they are already working under different time schedules. Traffic problem in Kuwait has reached alarming levels, particularly, with the start of this academic school year.
The government has been adopting various approaches and looking at several options that reduce and manage traffic jams, and the project of building a metro railway station, is also one such measure to ease the situation.
