Strict measures planned to prevent recurrence of expatriate atrocities in Kuwait
Following a spate of strikes by immigrant workers, the government in Kuwait has been taking several measures to tackle the issue and prevent recurrence of such events in future.
Among the measures being currently implemented are, the introduction of minimum wages of KD40 for cleaning staff, and KD70 for security guards and restriction on work permits for certain nationalities. The government is also considering the possibility of implementing more stringent measures for issuing visit visas, and equally stringent measures in governing the issue of business visas for Arab business people.
In the meanwhile, political activists have blamed that the government is responsible for the recent labour unrests. They said the demonstrations are the outcome of lack of seriousness on the part of the government in tackling issues that demanded attention. They also condemned the actions initiated and procedures taken by various ministries and the government.
Kuwait was very much in need of skilled expatriates, after the society turned from being productive into non-productive one, particularly, after exporting its first shipment of oil in 1946.
Kuwaiti population is incapable of performing most duties, which are otherwise executed by expatriate workforce. The Labour Ministry has been accused of failing to impose strict penalties on the erring companies who do not adhere to the laws. The companies are have begun realizing that their atrocities will go unchecked, and continued to ignore laws, which eventually led to the unrest in Kuwait, spoiling the reputation of Kuwait internationally.
Media reports point out to the fact that the demonstrations have taken place due to flouting of local and international labour laws, which stipulate suitable accommodation and substantial wages for hired laborers.
