Three-day strike by Asian workers called off in Kuwait
The Kuwaiti government has entered into a deal with Asian workers to end a three-day strike on pay and conditions, reports KUNA.
The strike, which turned partly violent with workers ransacking offices and turning down cards, was dispersed by the Police.
The strike was called for due to the soaring inflation, and lack of reasonable pay and conditions.
The Cabinet Minister, Faisal al-Hajji addressed the workers that they need to return to work, and that the government has agreed to ensure their rights and warned that anyone participating in riots would be deported.
About 500 Asian cleaners and workers had earlier staged street demonstrations until the police interfered to restore peace.
A series of strikes in Kuwait has sparked calls by Parliament deputies to improve the conditions of expatriates, mainly Arab and Asians, who constitute two-thirds of Kuwait’s 3.2million population.
Kuwait witnessed an annual inflation of 11.4 percent in April, with a surge in housing and food costs.
