Kuwait may consider granting permanent residency to expatriates
The government in Kuwait is considering a proposal that provides permanent residency to few bedoons (stateless Arabs) and expatriates residing in Kuwait, revealed the Interior Minister, Sheikh Jabel Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, yesterday.
The Minister mentioned this while responding to criticism from few MPs during a Parliament session yesterday, pertaining to granting of citizenships in Kuwait. However, when questioned further details about the permanent residency proposal, the Minister replied that it is only an “idea, which is being studied,” and did not give further comments.
Out of the 3.4million population in Kuwait, about 2 million are expatriates and bedoons. Several hundreds have lived in the country for decades and spent their entire lives in Kuwait. However, the duration of an expatriate’s stay in Kuwait, does not affect his/her residency status. All expatriates are required to have a Kuwaiti sponsor, and need to renew their residency visas regularly.
Several requests had been made to abolish the sponsor system, but in vain. Now, the Government’s decision to consider granting of citizenship to bedoons and non-Arab expatriates may also stir controversy, reports The Kuwait Times.
