Kuwait resumes visa stamping to Indian workers
Kuwait has resumed stamping of visas of Indian domestic workers, following agreement to adopt a Kuwaiti model based work contract. This puts an end to the six months standoff, which resulted due to a dispute over labor contract between both countries.
Following the dispute, the Kuwait Embassy in India had stopped stamping visas of both private and domestic sectors, leaving numerous Indian job seekers stranded. Out of the 650,000 Indians in Kuwait, about 280,000 have been employed in the domestic sector.
According to sources, the visa standoff sparkled when the Indian authorities requested Kuwait to implement few new terms that were included in the employment contract. Kuwait argued on the basis that as the Indian contract has no legitimacy in its court, India should adopt a contract based on Kuwaiti model.
The Indian labor contract had stipulated eight hours of work, and every additional hour to be considered overtime, apart from making it mandatory for the sponsor to offer a cell phone to the domestic workers on his/her arrival to the country.
