First LEED certified structure in Kuwait announced
The Al Ahmad International Financial Center has been designated as the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified structure in Kuwait, according to KEO International Consultants.
It has been revealed by the US Green Building Council, that the 1.2million square feet project, is officially registered with the council, and has now been pre-cerrified to get LEED certification, agreed KEO.
KEO was given the incentive to pursue a sustainable design using guidelines and tools outlines in the Green Building Rating System during end of 2007, by the developer AlShaab Real Estate Co., which is also the Securities House for Real Estate Co.
Apart from creating an iconic 40-storey tower, which primarily comprises high-end hotel and offices, KEO was also assigned the task of accomplishing a LEED Gold rating under the core and shell rating system of US Green Building Council.
Apart from meeting and even exceeding a series of green requirements, the tower includes a series of wind turbines and PV Panels that provide renewable source of energy, said a company statement.
The design solution comprises four stacked courtyard atriums that ranges from 8 floors to 13 floors each, three of which include office floors, while one includes a four-star business hotel that has the capacity to accommodate 200 rooms. The ground floor houses a separate Trading Hall that can accommodate 24-hour trading for the facility. The tower induces wind at the top of the buildings wherein the wind turbines are positioned to generate power for the building.
The LEED Green Building Rating System encourages global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria. It is a third party certification program and the internationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
