Massive expansion plans of Kuwait International Airport to begin in summer
The expansion and renovation of Kuwait International Airport will begin next summer, transforming the facility into a main national landmark on completion of works.
The Director, Department of Projects, at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, said that this venture which would begin next summer and would ensure that the building and sites in the facility will match international standards in terms of appearance, efficiency and service.
The Kuwait airport would be transformed into one of the top airports in the Middle East, he added.
The Authority is at the moment examining biddings, before beginning its first phase of the venture, which is due in September this year.
The renovation and expansion plans have been initiated as per H.H. Amir’s vision of transforming Kuwait into a business hub, the official said. Speaking details about the venture, he noted that renovations would cover the runways, expansion to accommodate giant aircraft and aircraft taxing plots, apart from increasing the operational capacity from 450,000 to 650,000 landings and take-offs each year.
An agreement has already been signed with the municipality for expansion of southern and western regions of the facility. The two current runways will be expanded and one-third will be constructed to accommodate aircraft of all sizes, including giant ones.
The mega project also aims to increase the accommodation capacity from seven million passengers to twenty million or more, and chalk out a plan to build a new passenger terminal. Even the cargo accommodation capacity of the airport will be increased from the current 600,000 tons per year to two million tons during the first phase, and thereafter to six million. The facility will have the capacity to accommodate about 70 cargo planes.
