Kuwait Parliament dissolved, Fresh elections likely on May 17th
The Emir of Kuwait has dissolved the parliament and has ordered fresh elections, as a move to resolve the tiffs between the government and the deputies.
Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah issued decree for a fresh election yesterday evening.
The Cabinet resigned on Monday, within a year after being sworn in, and complains that the non-co-operation from parliament has blocked legislation.
Fresh elections will be conducted on May 17th. Kuwait had plunged into crisis when all the 14 members of the Cabinet submitted their resignation to the Prime Minister on Monday, and complained that lawmakers were cause interference in their work, preventing them to carry on with their duties.
The government and the Cabinet has been at loggerheads over many issues, such as the recent pay-hike for civil servants, which the government was objecting as it had already given them enough raise. The Cabinet also rejected a parliament bill, which required the state to pay off consumer debts of private citizens.
Being the Head of all authorities in Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah had the option of either accepting the government’s resignation or issuing a decree to dissolve the parliament and conduct fresh polls. In case Sheikh Sabah accepts the Cabinet’s resignation, he could have asked Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti Prime Minister to form a new government or somebody else to become the premier.
However, in his speech to the media, the Emir announced his decision to dissolve the Parliament and conduct fresh elections.
This is the fifth such dissolution in the 46 year democracy of the nation.
