Expats express concern over escalating rentals and prices in Kuwait
The residents and citizens in Kuwait, have expressed their apprehension over the proposed hike in rental fee, as it is coincidental with hike in prices of consumer goods, reports Kuwait Times.
Most tenants expressed their fear of being at the receiving end, as the owner could take advantage of the situation and provides an ultimatum to either vacate their flats or accept the hike in rentals.
A teacher in a private school, with a salary of KD136 per month for the past ten years, lamented that expatriates in Kuwait could hardly cope with the high cost of living, as their income is very limited. He suggested that the government and the Parliament should take up the issue seriously and help in solving this issue.
Another expatriate, who runs his own business, mentioned that this continuous hike in rental fee will only lead to unemployment, as most shop-owners will be compelled to shut down their establishments, as they can no longer afford to pay the salaries and rent to their workers.
Yet another expatriate said that they have no option but to send back their families home, for reducing the burden of expenditure, which would eventually set families apart. Yet others, might opt to quit their jobs and return home with their families, he said.
A 25-year old citizen, who was shortly planning to get married, lamented that his salary was not sufficient to even begin a family. To add to this, it is also not possible to buy a plot of land due to the exorbitant prices prevailing in the realty sector currently.
One among the expats pointed out that people are compelled to opt for rented homes, as they cannot build one on their own, due to high prices of real estate properties in the country. Meanwhile, if the rent is being increased, what could be done, he questioned.
Residents have appealed to the government to take serious measures to end the crisis for benefit of Kuwait and its people.
