Kuwait mulls building world-class mega airport

Kuwait is considering building a new world-class mega airport to meet the rapid growth in air traffic, revealed Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah.

Kuwait plans to put up a tender for setting up a new airport with capacity of 25 million passengers annually, said Sheikh Salman in his speech at the Kuwait Investment Forum, which kicked off in Kuwait.

The new airport will be located in northern Kuwait, the decision being taking after looking into basic requirements like airport building, safety standards and weather. The site would facilitate establishment of an integrated airport that would cater to all transport and logistic services.

Shaikh Salman mentioned that the government would allocate the land to private sector to build, operate and manage the project. He further said that assigning such mega projects to specialized international companies may be the best way to achieve a public-private sector partnership.

The planned investment on the new airport project is $12billion, and it is likely to create job opening for 15,000 people, and serve as a great platform for training national cadres by international experts. He further emphasized that the new project is bound to improve air traffic.

Pointing to the air traffic witnessed at Kuwait International Airport which has seen considerable growth in recent years, he said Kuwait will see a rapid growth in passenger and cargo movement over the coming two decades.
