Kuwait Ministries plan massive downsizing of expat employees

The Ministry of Public Works is planning to replace all its expat employees with Kuwaitis within next five years.

According to latest report, the ministry is keen on benefitting from experiences of national labour and contributes by providing job opportunities to the youth, based on plan of the Cabinet and is in-line with the nationalization policy in the public sector.

The Ministry of Electricity and Water plans to reduce 50 percent of expat workers, says the report, which states that the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Eng. Mohammad Bou Shahri has told the Directors of various sectors in the Ministry to adopt a comprehensive strategy to stop recruiting expat workers for operation and maintenance works, and begin training national workforce to replace them within a time frame.

MEW has already begun reducing the number of expat workers who are working on contract basis by 30 percent in technical sectors and by 50 percent in administration and finance sector.
