Lawmakers propose to reduce expat population in the country
The lawmakers in Kuwait, namely, Khalil Abul, Oudah Al-Oudah, Abdulwahab Al-Babtain, Omar Al-Tabtabaei, and Ahmad Al-Fadhl have drafted a law to reduce the expat population in Kuwait, to maintain demographic balance in the country within next five years.
As per the report, the MPs call to establish a higher national committee for the demographic structure to be headed by the Interior Minister. The proposed Committee will take necessary procedures to equalize the number of nationals and expats over the next five years.
As per the report, the proposal exempts domestic helpers, contract workers, who are recruited to work on specific large development projects and children of Kuwaiti women with non-Kuwaiti husbands.
At present, there are more than 650,000 expats working as domestic workers in the country. Out of a population of 4.4mn people, Kuwaitis constitute 30 percent or 1.33mn. As per calculation, the number of Indians and Egyptians cannot surpass 500,000 or 30 percent of the expected 1.6mn expats. At present, there are more than 900,000 Indians and 600,000 Egyptian expats in the country.
