New electricity tariffs in Kuwait from mid-2017

New electricity tariffs would be implemented in Kuwait from mid-2017, on receiving the approval from the Assembly, announced MP Ahmad Lari, rapporteur of the Priorities Committee.

Lari, however, said that the implementation is unlikely prior to 2018 for private houses, a term used for nationals.

The government plans to kick-start the increase in fares with investment and commercial housing, a sector which includes apartments, where majority of the expat communities live.

The whole issue has been listed on the agenda of 12th April regular Assembly session. During the session, the Assembly will also discuss the government’s economic reform program, apart from several other issues.

The government has proposed a price of 5 fils for the first 3000 kilowatts, which gradually grows to 15 fils above 9000kw. But, MPs have proposed that consumption under 6000kw may remain at the current rate of 2 fils per kilowatt and 5 fils for consumption above this.

The government proposed 5 fils per kilowatt for upto 1000kw for apartments, 10 fils for 1000 to 2000 kw, and 15fils for above that. The MPs have not so far asked for any reduction in these rates.
