Kuwait plans suspension of expat employment in public sector

The special committee formed by the Cabinet to correct the population structure in Kuwait has suggested suspension of employment of expatriates in the public sector, except those with rare specializations that are not commonly found among nationals.

Chaired by the State Minister for Planning and Development Affairs, Hind Al-Sabeeh, the Committee members include representatives of Foreign Affairs Ministry, Interior Ministry, Central Administration for Statistics, Higher Council for Planning, Public Authority for Manpower, Manpower and Government Restructuring Program and Public Authority for Civil Information.

The Committee has recommended establishment of a company to handle re-employment of expatriate workers and deal with issues pertaining to travel ban slapped on expatriates whose visas expired and have been referred for deportation.

The committee also recommends allocating a quota for each nationality, and foreigners employed for government contracts need to leave the country immediately on completion of the projects.

A source revealed that the authority finds it necessary to restructure areas where expatriate employees and bachelors would reside in a manner such that they do not concentrate in a certain area, and maintain the balance and population structure. The government will further reactivate the decision to evict bachelors from family residential areas.
