Minimum referral wages hiked for Indian domestic workers on Visa 20

The minimum referral wage in employment contracts attested by the Embassy may be increased to KD100 per month for all Indian domestic workers visiting Kuwait on Visa No.20, effective 1st March 2015, it has been announced. Currently, the minimum wages for Indian domestic workers range from KD70 to KD75 per month.

This decision has been made after studying the labour market situation in the region. The minimum wage will continue to be exclusive of accommodation, food and other amenities as stipulated in the Kuwait laws and regulations, says an Indian Embassy press release.

On a daily basis, there are atleast few highly distressed Indian nationals who visit the Embassy for various reasons, some of them being runaway housemaids, male domestic workers at farms who have escaped ill-treatment meted out to them by their sponsors in Kuwait. They often seek shelter in Embassy and seek help in repatriation.

Such Indian nationals are often seen hungry and dehydrated. Therefore, as an immediate welfare measure from the Indian Government, the Embassy will offer all of them light snacks and soft drinks free-of-cost while also attending to their personal problems.
